The Best Detox Smoothies

by - January 03, 2018

Lately I have been reading non-stop about 2018 fitness and health plans and goals.  It's wild how excited people get with every new year to start losing weight or get healthy.  Personally I try to maintain my weight and stay healthy year round so that I don't have to keep starting over every new year.  I do this mainly by eating well and staying active.  When it comes to eating well I have a fool proof diet plan that keeps me in check.  I eat very light during the day usually under 400 calories and eat a smaller portion of larger calorie meal for dinner.  The reason behind the large calorie meal at dinner is that my husband eats a lot and needs more calories to maintain.  He has an extremely high metabolism and basically eats in the exact opposite way that I do.

Since I eat so few calories during the day I have a bunch of meals and snacks that keep me full throughout the day and are super healthy.  I often drink detox smoothies after a morning workout to keep my metabolism pumping or the morning after I indulge in a big meal with my husband (pizza and burgers are my weakness).  These smoothies are packed with superfoods and give me amazing, healthy energy so that I'm ready to take on the day and stay full until dinner time.  Here are some of my go-to smoothies, with little tidbits about why I love them and keep making them.
I hope you enjoy!

This is by far my favorite smoothie.  The recipe is from the site Eating Bird Food, which is written by a health coach and full other great recipes and workouts.  The reason I love this smoothie so much is because grapefruit is my favorite fruit, I find it to be so refreshing and even cleansing in a way.  Grapefruit is full of Vitamin C which has a plethora of health benefits including, strengthening the immune system, boosting the metabolism and reducing stress. I like to keep green smoothies in my rotation as much as possible.  The green component to most green smoothies is kale or spinach.  This recipe from Vibrant Plate, is made with spinach.  I prefer spinach in my smoothies over kale, it is less bitter, blends easier and is full of all the same nutrients.  The reason I like this recipe so much is it's simple, no crazy ingredients and if you don't have the apple or the lime it still tastes great.  I like to use frozen bananas, I keep them in my freezer with frozen berries so that if I'm ever hungry and the fridge is empty I can at least have a yummy smoothie.

This smoothie from the Minimalist Baker is technically a green smoothie since it has spinach or kale but is berry based making it a berry smoothie.  The fact that it is berry based makes it like a sweet treat instead of a healthy smoothie, which I love.  Berries such as blueberries, blackberries and strawberries are not only delicious but they are packed with antioxidants, fiber and Vitamin C.  When I make this I substitute the fruit juice for water.  Fruit juice can be high in sugar and calories, just by substituting water you can cut out 50 to 100 calories from this smoothie.

When it comes to my after workout out smoothie, this is it!  I am usually famished after my morning workouts and this one fills me up from the oats and replenishes my muscles with protein from the Greek yogurt.  Plus it creamy, sweet and delish.  Oats have been linked to lowering cholesterol so this is a great smoothie if you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol.  Oats are also high in Vitamin B1 which is needed for the body to covert food into fuel and metabolize fats and proteins.

I hope you don't think I'm crude by asking the next question... have you ever been constipated after eating too much?  Well it happens to me every once and while and that's when I make this smoothie from Simple Vegan Blog.  It is made with 12 dates (which is a lot of dates).  Dates are high in fiber and will most likely make you use the restroom.  If you don't have dates you can use prunes, dates are a bit sweeter and I'm assuming that is why they are used in this recipe.
