Who knew even fashion icons doubt themselves sometimes? When promoting the new Fenty Skin products last Wednesday, the Fenty founder Rihanna confessed to Access Hollywood that prior to stepping out on the red carpet at the 2015 Met Gala, she felt that her gown may have been too extreme.
The now-iconic Guo Pei couture dress won the red carpet that year, stunning crowds with its hand-embroidered and fur-trimmed gold train which took 2 years to craft. The imperial cape and matching gold headdress fit the 2015 Met Gala theme of “China: Through the Looking Glass” perfectly. The gown weighed 55 lbs and took 4 adults to carry the train of her dress throughout the night.
With such an extravagant dress, the logistics of getting in and out of the car had to be perfectly choreographed. She explained that they even planned “who sits at the door, where does the coat go, where do I [Rihanna] sit.”
The pop star remembers “being so scared to get out of the car because I felt like, ‘I’m doing too much.’ I was driving past the red carpet, and I was just seeing, like, gowns, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m a clown. People are going to laugh at me.” She even circled the Metropolitan Museum of Art three times before getting out of the car to walk the red carpet.
But Rihanna proved to get the last laugh, when her legendary look stole the night. The gown also inspired viral internet memes, comparing the over-the-top train to both a frying pan with the egg and a cheese pizza. Looking back, the singer says it was all worth it just for the endless memes.
